The Chase star Mark Labbett diagnosed with diabetes during routine check-up

Mark Labbett has shared how he was diagnosed with diabetes during a routine check-up when a nurse pointed out he may have the condition.

The star of The Chase was motivated to make lifestyle changes after being told he had Type 2 diabetes in 2017, according to Liverpool Echo.

During lockdown, "The Beast" shed almost 10 stone which stems from a nurse who thought he should have a test for diabetes when noticing something wasn't right with the skin on his legs - as The Express reports.

He said: "I've got skin that doesn't heal properly in my lower legs.

"A nurse looked at me and she asked, 'Are you sure your not diabetic?'"

"They took a test and she said, 'Yes, you're diabetic.'"

Since it was detected early, The Chaser says that he has never had a diabetic episode - and the diagnosis inspired a lifestyle change that has seen him go from 29 to 19 stone.

But Mark says he still has still working towards his weight loss goals.

He said: "I've still got a way to go. It turned out a couple of years ago I wasn't far away from being non diabetic.

"I got pretty close to it. Unfortunately, I let myself go a bit because I didn't know at the time."

The Chase star has since teamed up with Fitbit and Diabetes UK for the One Million Step Challenge.

The challenge aims to encourage participants throughout the country to step up their activity and take at least 10,000 steps a day to reach a one million step target at the end of the three-month challenge period.

Mark credited the campaign with helping him lose weight in recent months.

He said: "I had been getting fit anyway because of being in lockdown, because my wife works as a nurse and I was the primary carer for our son. And I soon found that looking after an active three-year-old is tough.

"The weight just fell off me just chasing after him.

"Now that we've got through lockdown I want to continue the good work as it were and not let the weight pile on.

"So, when they came through with an offer and FitBit mentioned the 10,000 steps challenge I wanted to take part."
