The Chase's Mark Labbett makes 'awkward' Phillip Schofield reference

Fans of ITV quiz show The Chase were left feeling awkward after Mark Labbett mentioned former This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield in an incorrect answer. In scenes that aired on Wednesday evening (June 14), host Bradley Walsh welcomed four know-it-alls onto the show to take on Mark Labbett - also known as "The Beast" - and win some cash to take home.

The team of four, composed of Hilary, Dickie, Eleanor and Paddy, did well for themselves as they went head-to-head with The Beast individually, each securing a place in the all-important Final Chase. The four quizzers were competing for £25,000, building up 25 steps in the final showdown, reports the Liverpool Echo.

As Mark attempted to catch up with yesterday's team, Bradley asked: "Who presented the ITV game show, Small Fortune?"

The Chaser swiftly replied, saying it was "Phillip Schofield". However, Mark's aptitude for general knowledge failed him at that particular hurdle, as Bradley informed him that the correct answer was another This Morning host - Dermot O'Leary.

Mark's attempt to beat the quizzers was unsuccessful, as he could only build up 17 steps. But viewers were distracted from the competition itself following the mention of recently axed This Morning presenter Phil, who stepped away from the flagship show in May after engaging in an "unwise but not illegal" affair with a much younger ITV employee.

Viewers expressed their shock on social media. Steve tweeted: "Schofield klaxon."

"Philip Schofield?" James wondered. "Bad timing!"

Last night's instalment of the show was filmed way before the recent This Morning drama, as it first aired back in February 2021. But, arguably, it could have been repeated on a better day for ITV, as it aired again on the day ITV bosses, Dame Carolyn McCall and managing director Kevin Lygo, faced questions from MPs about the former This Morning host's exit from the programme during a Culture, Media and Sport Committee session.
