The Chase's Darragh Ennis apologises for sharing fake fact after fans call him out

The Chase star Darragh Ennis has apologisied to fans after they noted he had shared a fake fact to Twitter.

The quizzing expert, better known as The Menace on hit ITV quiz show The Chase, shares fun facts as he likes to fascinate his followers with pieces of trivia.

Today, Darragh shared a snippet about beloved Women in Love author D.H. Lawrence and Manfred von Richtofen.

Darragh tweeted: "Fun fact: DH Lawrence was the brother in law of Manfred Von Richthoffen, aka The Red Baron".

However, a number of Darragh's followers took to his replies section to correct him.

The Chase's Darragh Ennis had to admit that he had shared a fake fact on Twitter (ITV)

One penned: "I always love your fun facts Darragh! But it looks Freida was actually a distant relative of Manfred Von Richthofen. It appears the authorities in World War 1 thought she might be a spy because of that connection."

Darragh then replied: "Cheers. It seems you're right and the 'facts' book I read that in needed you as a researcher".

A different user replied: "Fake fact Darragh. Manfred von Richthofen was born in Wroclaw, now Poland. His father was Major Albrecht Philipp Karl Julius Freiherr von Richthofen.

"Frieda was born in Metz, now France. Her dad was Baron Friedrich Ernst Emil Ludwig von Richthofen, an engineer in the German army."

Darragh later admitted that the fact he shared was not true (@bones_giles/Twitter)

Darragh then responded to this user too, noting that the book he took the fact from was to blame

He tweeted: "Yeah it seems the book I was reading had that one wrong. Whoops".

After this, The Menace himself replied to his original tweet to recognise his error once again.

Darragh penned: "This one isn't true it seems. That's what I get for late night fact tweeting and not checking my sources. Thanks for setting me straight guys".

We hope this doesn't put off Darragh from sharing fun facts in future, however!

Wednesday's episode of The Chase will not air this week as ITV makes way for President Joe Biden's inauguration ceremony.

The Chase continues on weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
