The Chase's Bradley Walsh can't believe contestant was a member of famous 80's band

Bradley Walsh was shocked when a contestant on today's episode of The Chase revealed he was once a part of a well-known pop group.

Four new contestants appeared on the ITV gameshow and took on Chaser Jenny Ryan in the latest edition of the quiz in a bid to win a cash prize.

Up first was 58-year-old Ron - who surprised Bradley Walsh when he started talking about his interest in music.

The warehouseman from Blyth revealed he played guitar for a band in his spare time - and performed in clubs across the North East during the 1980s.

When the host probed to see if Ron had been a part of any bigger bands, the quizzer revealed he had been a part of a well-known pop group.

He said: "Years ago I was a part of the band that became Prefab Sprout."

Ron explained he left because they had a "stupid name" which left a shocked Bradley Walsh to exclaim: "You did not?"

Prefab Sprout regularly made the charts during the 1980's - and their hit song, "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" peaked at number 7 in the UK singles charts.

Bradley Walsh couldn't help but laugh when Ron revealed he left Prefab Sprout because of the name to join a band called the "Sensible Pencils".

He quipped: "Touch of sliding doors everyone."

Fans of the show took to Twitter to respond to the musical past.

One user said: "Wow. He left because of the name!"

Another was happy to be reminded of Prefab Sprout:

India said: Loved Prefab Sprout. Cars And Girls, The King Of Rock N Roll. The wonderfully named Paddy Mcaloon. #TheChase"

After a nervy performance in the cash-builder, Ron regained his confidence in the head to head to defeat Jenny Ryan and bring £2000 home for the Final Chase.

He was joined by Alex, a law student from Surrey, and Barbara, a retired market trader from Essex, to compete for a grand total of £12000 in the Final Chase.

The team built up an impressive 23 steps in the final round - and The Chaser could not catch them meaning they took home £4000 each.

The Chase returns tomorrow at 5pm on ITV and ITVHub
