The Chase's Anne Hegerty in awe of 'dark horse' contestant's incredible knowledge

The Chase fans were stunned by a contestant's remarkable general knowledge this evening - branding her a "dark horse."

68 year old Barbara from Bristol opened the show, racking up an impressive score and going on to the final with £7000.

Host Bradley Walsh wanted to know which of the five Chasers she'd ideally take on.

Recalling a famous episode from the show's past, Barbara replied: "I think I'd like to take on Anne.

"I like her sense of humour, and I've always had a soft spot for her since the Fanny Chmelar incident!"

"I've got a soft spot for her as well," Bradley came back, "It's a swamp!"

Barbara got her wish, and out walked The Governess.

But Barbara had fans worried after admitting that she wasn't really a quizzer - and just enjoys the shows.

Their concerns were misplaced though, as she became the only one of the four to make it through to the final and answered a staggering 17 questions correctly.

Even Anne was full of praise, telling a happy Barbara she was "one of the best players I've ever faced."

One fan tweeted: "Barbara's a bit of a dark horse! Well done! #TheChase."

Another chimed in: "A promising start. Well done Barbara!"

"Take a bow Barbara love!" a third wrote.

"I'd be gutted if Barbara doesn't win this," a fourth penned.

Sadly, Barbara was caught, but forced Anne to admit she was very nearly beaten.

ITV recently teased that The Chase would get back to filming, having come to a grinding halt back in February.

While coronavirus and the lockdown has kept Bradley and the gang away from the studio, ITV dropped the news that new episodes would be coming our way as part of its autumn 2020 slate.

In the meantime, they've been airing repeats so that fans won't have to go without.

Serious fans have also been treated to Beat The Chasers, the spin-off that filmed back in January.

*The Chase airs weekdays on ITV at 5pm.
