The Chase fans gobsmacked as contestant doesn't know shortened term for mathematics

A game player on The Chase left viewers at home laughing at their screens after revealing he didn't know what the term "mathematics" stood for.

Contestant Bryan appeared on Thursday night's show alongside his teammates for a chance to beat The Chaser and take home the cash prize.

But high hopes for Bryan to win the show were soon called off as fans were left shocked when he revealed he didn't know the shorted term for the school subject.

The awkward incident happened during the quick-fire questions round, where the contestant had to answer as many questions correctly as quickly as possible during a time limit in a bid to go up against Chaser Shaun Wallace.

Bradley asked: "Right Bryan, are you ready? In the UK, the school subject mathematics is often shortened to what?"

Without thought, Bryan passed the question as Bradley told him: "Maths."

Taking to Twitter, fans shared their thoughts after they watched the awkward moment unfold on their TV screens.

One wrote: "Mathematics is usually shortened to what word"? "Pass" FFS - just goes to show the state of education in this country nowadays."

Another penned: "You didn't have to be British to know the answer to that Maths question... what a t**t! #TheChase"

"Mathematics is shortened to? Pass," a third quipped.

As a fourth asked: "Did he just pass on "maths"? #TheChase "

Unfortunately for Bryan, he didn't make it to the end of the show to compete against Shaun.

His teammates Mandy and Nicholas got through to the last round, but were defeated by The Chaser.

Shaun admitted the show can be "unpredictable" after the team lost out on the cash prize during an epic finale.
