The Chase fans convinced Gareth Southgate question can't a be coincidence

Fans of The Chase were feeling a bit suspicious after a question on today's episode was about England manager, Gareth Southgate.

The episode of the popular ITV gameshow saw another four members of the public test their wits against Chaser Jenny "The Vixen" Ryan in a bid to take the cash prize home.

However, during the head-to-head round of retired HR Officer, Christine, there was a coincidentally topical question.

The 59-year-old from Leeds was asked: "Which England player's penalty miss opens the song 'Three Lions '98 by Baddiel Skinner and the Lightning Seeds"

The options were between Stuart Pearce, Gareth Southgate and Chris Waddle - and, although all players had missed high profile penalties in tournaments for England - Christine opted to go with Chris Waddle.

The song actually begins with the current England manager's high profile miss in Euro '96 - and fans of the show couldn't help but think the timing was a little bit too 'coincidental' after Southgate finally banished the demons of his infamous miss to lead England to their first major tournament final last night.

Victoria (@Tori_Alice32) tweeted : "Question about Gareth Southgate missing the penalty they must of picked this episode on purpose"

Stephanie (@StephsMoansx) said: "That Southgate questions seems too coincidental #TheChase"

Caroline (@carolinej0anne) added: "Obviously they have all the football questions now #TheChase"

Joining Charlotte on the team today was Charlotte, a 45 year old attendance specialist from Gwent, Conor a 25 year old retail supervisor from Derry and Anthony , a 34 year old personal trainer from West Sussex

All contestants defeated the Chaser in the head-to-head meaning they were playing for a jackpot of £18,000.

The team built up a lead of 19 steps - but The Chaser caught them with just 13 seconds remaining meaning the contestants left empty-handed.

The Chase continues tomorrow at 5pm
