The Chase contestant tragically dies after ITV episode aired just last week

A former contestant of The Chase has sadly passed away, her husband has announced following her appearance on the show.

Debbie took part in the show before the pandemic lockdown and the episode aired as a repeat last week on ITV.

The contestant had survived a battle with cancer 14 years before the disease tragically returned for a second time, writes The Mirror.

Debbie's husband took to social media after the episode aired on Wednesday and wrote: "Debbie, who was on the Chase on [Wednesday] and who Sean flirted with sadly lost her 17 year battle with cancer last week."

He added: "She was my beautiful wife and it was tough to see but at the same time lovely to see her how she was.

"It was filmed about three years ago. She was one of the last to be filmed before lockdown. She had breast cancer 14 years before this that had been away for a number of years, but about a year after she filmed this it came back in her bones and then in her brain."

Debbie sadly didn't make it through to the final chase (ITV)

During her episode, Debbie took on Shaun Wallace, also known as The Dark Destroyer, with the help of teammates Helen Inaam and George.

She managed to collate £5,000 in the cash-builder and The Dark Destroyer cheekily flirted with the ITV quiz show contestant.

*The Chase continues week days at 5pm on ITV1.
