The Chase contestant makes dig at Anne Hegerty - before realising that he's up against her

A Chase contestant made a bit of an awkward dig at Anne Hegerty tonight - moments before realising that he was up against her.

Retired financial advisor John, 58, won an impressive £9,000 in the cashbuilder round after getting nine questions right.

Asked who he would want to take on, he replied wryly: "It's more who I don't want to take on."

Host Bradley Walsh replied: "Oh really, who don't you want to play?"

"I don't want to play Anne," John admitted. "I find her a bit intimidating! I think she might just psyche me out."

John, 58, admitted that he didn't want to face Anne (ITV)
Unfortunately, the Governess was the Chaser who walked out (ITV)

And who would come strolling out but Anne herself.

John hung his head while Anne smirked as she reached her podium.

John said that he found Anne 'intimidating' (ITV)

"It's the legendary Governess - it's Tugboat Annie!" Bradley exclaimed before bursting into laughter.

Rolling her eyes, Anne said: "Oh hello John. I'm not going to psyche you out."

Despite being unnerved, John made it to the Final Chase with a fellow player and scored 19 steps for her to beat.

*The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV
