The Chase left viewers furious after one contestant took the lower offer of minus £4,000, after she had bagged £6,000 in the cash builder.
The four players were whittled down to just two after Chaser Jenny Ryan caught two of the contestants.
Gemma, the last player to take on The Chaser, was ready to add her winnings to the pot of £24,000 built up by James.
She was then offered -£4,000, £6,000 or £56,000 by The Vixen.
Her teammate James, who won University Challenge, said: “£56,000 is a lot of money, but if you want to take the minus £4,000, I’ll understand. And I want another brain in the final chase.”
After saying that she would never be the person who would take the minus, Gemma knocked £4,000 off the total, leaving fans outraged.
Host Bradley Walsh and the Chaser agreed with the player, saying it was the ‘right decision’ to make.
However, furious fans shamed Gemma and said that she ‘didn’t deserve’ to win anything.
One said: “It infuriates me when contestants take the minus offer on The Chase. You deserve to get caught if you take the minus offer and take away someone else’s well-earned money.”
Another said: “Gemma is probably the most hated person in the UK at this moment in time.”
A third tweeted: “Just turned on The Chase there, minus £4000 the woman went through with. The hell man? Why’s the guy congratulating her getting through? Pull the chair away from her when she goes to sit down.”
“Taking a minus offer is like not paying your TV licence and then standing outside someone's window and watching their TV” said another angry viewer.
Another fan said: “Tough decision now. We want James to win but Gemma to lose.”
“She had been gearing up to a minus offer the whole show. Greedy and wants a cut. I reckon that fella could give it a decent go on his own” ranted another fan of the show.
