Here’s the third track in our series of live performances by the Charlatans, in association with Muzu.tv. Talking in Tones was the first track to be released from the band’s acclaimed single Modern Nature. The title came to singer Tim Burgess outside a branch of Barclays bank in London, and the song is about telepathy in relationships.
Burgess says: “Talking in Tones is the opening track on the album. I quite like the idea of it starting off quite pensive and then opening up into quite a big chorus, the contrast is something that really appealed to me. It’s interesting doing it in front of people, you know, even though there’s only about eight people, sometimes it’s more nerve wracking than if there’s 2,000 people. The song is quite sparse and there’s a nice loop going on. In some ways it reminded me of the first track on Tellin’ Stories, a song called With No Shoes, that had a similar opening-to-an-album kind of feel. It got me thinking it should be the opener and our first song back.”
