The Chapel House neighbours 'Dancing in the Street’ during coronavirus lockdown

With bars, pubs, restaurants and other leisure facilities closed across the North East, people are having to find different ways to keep themselves entertained at home.

Chapel House Drive neighbours Michelle Charlton and Jackie Turnbull came up with a heartwarming idea to lift their community's spirits.

And with Pride Radio on board, who played David Bowie and Mick Jagger's, Dancing in the Street, the duo encouraged dozens of their neighbours to come out to their drives to dance and sing along.

From a pumpkin, clowns and Mick Jagger himself, residents of all ages in a range of fancy dress outfits, came together during this uncertain time.

And Josh Peters brought his amplifier to the street so all the neighbours on the street could hear the song.

The event was arranged through the street's WhatsApp group and Michelle posted flyers through doors with the mission to bring a smile to residents' faces.

The 58-year-old grandma said: “We went out last week clapping, it was so touching to see the community spirit so in the spur of the moment we arranged to do a dance in a street and it took off from there.

“We chose the song as it has a feel good theme and this crisis is affecting the world.

“It was just lovely to just see everybody of all ages coming together just for a few minutes and we are hoping that maybe it will encourage others to have a bit of fun too.”

With talks amongst neighbours to host another event soon, last night shone a light during these dark times.

And following their amazing response, this Newcastle West end street is now planning to arrange a street party once the coronavirus pandemics over.
