The changing face of Leith Walk: We take a trip back in time to see how different things were in 2008

In five or six years from now we'll likely have trams running up and down Leith Walk – and chances are the route will look totally unrecognisable.

It's a major change which will not only alter the face of one of Edinburgh's longest streets, but will also have implications for residents, businesses and road users who are familiar with the route.

However, in truth, the route is ever-changing. New bars, restaurants and shops are always opening up and it you can bet it probably looks totally different now to how it did six to eight months ago.

All that without mentioning the ongoing battle to "Save Leith Walk" and prevent the demolition of a historical building, housing the Leith Depot pub among others, to make way for student flats.

So with major changes on the way, we decided to look back in time using a fancy Google tool to see how a trip down Leith Walk would have looked eleven years ago.

You can check out the then and now pictures using our gallery above, and feel free to share any memories of Leith Walk down the years, even further back than 2008 if you like, by contacting us on news@edinburghlive.co.uk.
