The changes in High Street

High Street, from the station down to Argos, has changed beyond recognition in the past few years.

At one point it was dominated by empty buildings and rundown shop fronts.

There are still some of those around, but large chunks of the street have been redeveloped, much of the work carried out by social housing provider Coastal Housing.

It's £25m regeneration plan saw the creation of the Urban Village in 2012, a development of flats, business space and retail units.

That was followed by the Creative Cluster, a dedicated space for use by the creative industries.

Further down the street, work has also taken place to create new business units there.

This included the rebuilding of the former Bush Hotel, which was demolished in 2013, despite its rich history, as it was claimed to be dangerous.

The former Grade II listed Georgian building was used by Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century and was said to have been the last pub Dylan Thomas drank in before his ill-fated trip to America.

A building in its image has now re-opened with a restaurant on the ground floor.

A third phase of Coastal Housing's regeneration will see the top end of High Street, closer to the station, redeveloped, to create links between The Strand, Orchard Street and High Street.
