• Cardiff City cut Queens Park Rangers' lead at the top to just two points after Jay Bothroyd's late winner against his former club Coventry City combined with a third goalless draw in four for the Rs. Not that it was a terrible result for the best defence in the land (three goals conceded in 12), especially after Paddy Kenny saved Dave Cotterill's first-half penalty.

• Norwich City's surprise home defeat to lowly Crystal Palace enabled Watford to move into third spot, as goals from Stephen McGinn and Marvin Sordell (his seventh of the season) sank Ipswich Town. And Brian Laws's Burnley are now fourth, Chris Eagles scoring twice (the first a real beauty) in the 3-0 win over Barnsley.

• A six-match unbeaten run will do wonders for any team in the Championship and that's what has propelled Derby County up to seventh. Kris Commons scored two in the 3-2 victory at Doncaster Rovers.

• Another team on a flying run is Portsmouth, but we've got Brian Oliver blogging on them later today, so I'll leave their win at Millwall to him.

• Middlesbrough began life without Gordon Strachan in much the same vein as life had been with him: a 1-0 defeat to Lewis McGugan's fizzing cross-shot for Nottingham Forest leaving them 21st.

• And Bristol City recorded a second win of the season, beating Reading courtesy of a Danny Haynes goal. They're still bottom, though, where they are joined in the relegation spots by Preston North End (a 3-2 defeat at home to Scunthorpe United completing a miserable day for the Fergusons) and Palace.
