The Championship club conversations which could have huge impact on Leeds United players

Clubs across the Championship could be forced to cut player wages to a maximum £6,000 a week as the coronavirus impact continues to rock football.

It was confirmed on Thursday afternoon that all professional football in England would remain postponed until April 30 at the earliest.

However, there is growing concern among those in the game that there could be a further extension with health experts warning that the worst of the virus is yet to hit the UK.

And now according to a report in The Telegraph, clubs in the Championship have discussed what will happen to player wages during this period of inactivity, with a wage cap now being considered.

A conference call, according to the report, took place on Friday where clubs considered the options moving forward, while the report also states that many stars in the second tier earn more than £35,000 a week, which would see them take considerable cuts until the resumption of the season.

One player, Swansea City's Andre Ayew, is believed to be still on Premier League-type wages at the Liberty Stadium, meaning he would be hit hard if the proposals were implemented.

But the report also states that clubs would face fierce opposition from the Professional Footballers' Association if they looked to implement such measures on members of their playing squad.

The EFL confirmed earlier in the week that they would be implementing a £50million fund for clubs to help with the financial struggles during the lockdown.
