The Champions League rule that will affect Spurs, Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool's last-16 ties

The Champions League round of 16 draw has concluded.

And there's two Premier League vs Bundesliga ties to look forward to in the new year.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur both finished runners-up in the group phase and their reward is a trip to Germany to face Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig respectively.

Jose Mourinho praises Paulo Gazzaniga

For the Blues it's a repeat of the 2012 final when they became the first - and only - London team to win the competition, while for Spurs it's a step into the unknown having never faced Leipzig before.

But en route to last season's final the Lilywhites' last-16 tie was against another side from Germany in Borussia Dortmund and that could be a good omen for Jose Mourinho's outfit.

As mentioned above, the Premier League teams finished second in their respective groups.

That means both will play the home games first on either February 18/19/25/26.

However, they won't be playing on the same night.

This is down to policing in London and as per Uefa's ruling on match scheduling which also means Chelsea and Spurs will play their last-16 ties across separate weeks.

"If more than one club from the same city, or within a radius of 50km (31 miles) of each other, is taking part in any of the UEFA club competitions and/or plays in the same stadium, and if the association and the clubs concerned explicitly declare when entering the clubs that their matches cannot be played on the same day or on consecutive days, the UEFA administration may alter or confirm dates and kickoff times in accordance with the principles set by the Club Competitions Committee," a statement reads.

This will also affect two other Premier League teams.

Manchester City and holders Liverpool have been drawn against the two Madrid clubs respectively and having won their groups will also see their ties played on separate weeks because of the second legs being in Spain.
