The Champions League changes which could affect Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs in 2024/2025

The European Club Association have plans to revamp the European football pyramid.

A meeting of the body's 232 members has been scheduled for 6 and 7 June, 2019 in Malta where ECA chairman Andrea Agnelli is expected to discuss a proposal which would affect Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and any London club playing Champions League football in the near future.

The BBC have reported that Agnelli wrote to each of the clubs, proposing new ideas to introduce a 'pan-European pyramidal league system' with continuity and opportunity to grow from within" and the "enhancement of mobility and dynamism across the system through carefully applied promotion and relegation".

Agnelli also says new competitions have to be "an inclusive platform for all clubs, based on sporting meritocracy, not historical privilege", and that "symbiosis" must be maintained with the domestic leagues.

Therefore, playing in European football's elite club competition would be based on performance and also would be irrespective of their domestic performance.

So finishing fourth in the Premier League wouldn't guarantee a spot in the Champions League for the following season.

It would also mean more matches and some form of promotion and relegation which could come into effect for the 2024/2025 campaign.

More details in regards to this proposal should come to light at the ECA meeting in June as the organisation wants to hear views on "principles we feel are fundamental to the future of European football".
