The challenges Nottingham Forest face to land Dwight Gayle in January

Nottingham Forest would have to make an “irresistible” offer if they want to land striker Dwight Gayle in January.

But even then, that may not be enough for the Reds to secure his signature.

A number of teams, including Forest, are believed to have an eye on the Newcastle United forward ahead of next month’s transfer window.

Gayle has featured just eight times for the Premier League side so far this season and has yet to find the back of the net.

Bolstering his team’s firepower is sure to be at the top of Reds boss Sabri Lamouchi’s wish list as he looks to oversee a promotion push in the second half of the campaign.

Prising Gayle away, though, will seemingly not be easy - and not just because of expected competition from other clubs.

Aware of plenty of interest, United, according to the Newcastle Chronicle, “will only consider an irresistible offer” for Gayle.

The report adds: “With Gayle deemed hot property in the Championship, it is believed that Newcastle will only entertain bids north of £15m.

“Gayle himself will also drive a hard bargain in terms of wages because, at 29 - and having 18 months left on his Toon contract - he knows this could be his last big packet.”

Magpies boss Steve Bruce has previously said he hopes Gayle remains in the north east.

But the Chronicle say: “A second complication for those sides (interested in Gayle) will be Newcastle’s insistence behind the scenes that Gayle won’t be let go unless they have a replacement back-up striker.

“Newcastle have been offered some interesting options on loan and chief scout Steve Nickson also has a list of possible permanent deals.”
