The challenge Man City boss Gareth Taylor laid down to Chloe Kelly

Gareth Taylor heaped praise on Chloe Kelly as Manchester City Women netted seven goals for the second successive week.

After a 7-0 victory over Aston Villa last weekend in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, City followed it up with a 7-1 win away at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Caroline Weir scored a quick brace early on before Steph Houghton got in on the act with two goals of her own, Ellen White added a fifth while Chloe Kelly and Janine Beckie rounded off the rout.

And Taylor was delighted with the progress of 23-year-old Kelly, who City signed from Everton last summer, after she scored and assisted three goals.

“I thought there were a number of good performances,” he said. “I thought Caroline Weir for 45 minutes showed her class when it mattered and contributed well.

“Chloe [Kelly] was great, we’ve been challenging her to make better decisions in the final third because she gets into good positions and then sometimes lets the opposition off. But I thought her decision making was really good and to create three goals is no mean feat.

“I was thinking that as I was watching her play, this girl has got the potential to do really well. One of the reasons is that she’s a really good girl to work with. She’s really hungry to improve and get better and that’s all you can ask for.”

With fellow title contenders Arsenal and Chelsea not playing this weekend, City moved up to third in the table and sit six points behind Manchester United with a game in hand.

Taylor knows how important it is that his side stay in contention with fixtures piling up and international breaks on the horizon.

He added: “I think the games when we do play against the top three or top four teams, they’re going to be really important and they’re potential title deciders.

“We’re giving ourselves a good chance, we’re still in the mix and a couple of games to catch up with which obviously we need to make count.”
