Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh is starring in The Chair, a new Netflix dramatic comedy set to premiere this August.
Oh plays Ji-Yoon, the no holds barred English chair for Pembroke university, a fictional small but highly prestigious US institution.
As the first woman of colour to hold the position Ji-Yoon is under lots of pressure to meet the high expectations of a fast-deteriorating English Department. We’ll see her falter as she tries to find her feet in a series of hilariously tense episodes.
Having made a name for herself as Dr Cristina Yang in the popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, Oh entered the imaginations of the British public as Eve Polaski, the titular character in the BBC’s Killing Eve.
Neither Grey’s Anatomy or Killing Eve can be thought of as traditional comedies but Oh is no stranger to comedic timing and she brought us many laughs in between jumpy scenes of the spy thriller.
In 2017, she tried her hand at satire in the movie Catfight, which is currently streaming on Netflix.
As well as being the lead actress for The Chair, Oh is a co-producer of the series alongside Amanda Peete, who stars in Amazon Prime’s The Romanoffs.
They’re joined by Peete’s husband David Benioff and his writing partner Dan Weiss (the dynamic duo behind Game of Thrones) and Bernie Caulfield who also worked on the fantasy programme.
For The Chair, Oh is joined by a few other famous faces. They includey Holland Taylor, who is known for her roles in Legally Blonde and Two and a Half Men, Bob Balaban of Netflix’s The Politician and Wes Anderson’s the Grand Budapest Hotel, Nana Mensah who plays Mistress Mira in Bonding which is also on Netflix and Marcia Debonis who you may remember from 13 Going on 30.
