The Celtic transfer hierarchy and who Ange Postecoglou could target next

Celtic need is urgent but time is at a real premium for Ange Postecoglou.

The arrival of Liel Abada and the seemingly imminent capture of Carl Starfelt from Rubin Kazan are a welcome double addition for the new manager.

It could be the shot in the arm his recruitment drive needs, opening the floodgates for further additions.

Postecoglou has clearly prioritised his backline in the early weeks of his tenure, given the sheer volume of defenders who have emerged as targets.

But this rebuild is less targeted and more all-encompassing if the 55-year-old is to steer the club back on a path to dominance.

Here's where he could look next.

Right-back

Boey is potentially next for Celtic (Lintao Zhang)

It's not just the heart of Celtic 's defence that needs strengthening with options at right-back alarmingly thin on the ground.

Anthony Ralston has been handed a new deal but it would require a remarkable turnaround for the 22-year-old to make the position his own at this stage, so far on the fringes has he been.

Sacha Boey and Brandon Soppy of Rennes are potential additions in an area it's fair to say is Postecoglou's next most pressing.

Boey, in particular, is an all-action full-back who enjoys snapping into tackles and playing high up the pitch.

It's a vital position in the manager's high-intensity system and one he'll be working day and night to shore up.

Winger

Abada primarily operated from the right hand side for Petah Tivka but Postecoglou's penchant for an inverted winger mean it's difficult to predict what his exact plans are for the 19-year-old.

Regardless, Mikey Johnston again pulling up with injury heightens a creeping dread that, at this moment, he can't be relied upon to stay fit.

None of that is his fault but Celtic could do with another flank option, regardless of Abada's arrival.

James Forrest is returning to fitness but with Mohamed Elyounoussi gone there's a considerable gap to be filled.

Another centre-back

Starfelt looks a solid start to reshaping the backline but he won't be enough.

Kristoffer Ajer looks bound to depart and that leaves youngsters Stephen Welsh and Osaze Urhogide as the only fit centre-backs, not counting the versatile Nir Bitton.

Mario Vuskovic, Ko Itakura and Erik Sviatchenko have been on Celtic's radar and Postecoglou would sleep easier if he could get another central defender through the door.

Christopher Jullien, of course, will return from injury in the next few months but the manager cannot afford to wait.

Striker

With Odsonne Edouard still likely to depart despite his move to Leicester hitting the buffers, Postecoglou could use more bodies in attack.

Albian Ajeti has been given a chance to establish himself thus far in pre-season and is odds-on to start against Midtjylland next week.

But the Swiss was a disappointment last term and entering the new campaign with him as first-choice striker would be a real gamble.

Postecoglou may not have much choice, mind you, unless a new man can be found.

Leigh Griffiths missed the entire pre-season training camp after being sent home amid a police investigation - from which he has now been cleared - but he will now be well behind the rest of the squad in fitness terms.
