The Celtic title rush that's set to bite the SPFL on the backside - Hotline

Just when you thought it was safe to consider the Premiership title debate closed...

The Hotline has a way of keeping arguments bubbling over and so it proved again as one punter caught wind of FIFA's plan to extend the transfer window for nations attempting to finish their season.

The SPFL campaign is, of course, done and dusted but it's thought a later deadline for clubs elsewhere could leave Scottish sides vulnerable to having their players snatched away without the ability to source replacements.

Jimmy Mac, Glasgow, said: "Now that FIFA are extending the transfer window for leagues who refused to end their season early it has come back to bite the SPFL on the backside big time due to their desperation to gift Celtic the title by calling the league."

There was plenty of ire directed at the Parkhead club from Lee Rankin, Cardenden, who - quite frankly - has had enough of them winning everything.

He said: “Celtic fans are beginning to sound like English commentators and the 1966 World Cup the way they keep banging on about everything they’ve won for the last nine seasons.”

Rangers will try to halt them next season and have already signed Ianis Hagi on a permanent deal with promising defender Calvin Bassey brought in from Leicester City.

But John Duffy, Linwood, said: “Rangers fans think they have signed Calvin Bassey but it’s actually Calvin Bassett and his father Bertie says Steven Gerrard will turn his boy into a world class player.”

Bassey was highly rated at Foxes and Rangers want their own rising stars to compete in League Two as part of a reconstruction proposal.

But George Fairgrieve , Edinburgh, wrote: "Another day dawns, the saga of the SPFL drags on and the supporters of the clubs most affected are still left in the dark, I’m told this whole sorry episode will soon be available in paperback, can anyone confirm?"

Brian Allan emailed: “I’m sick of all this reconstruction talk. How about this for a plan? Three leagues of 12 and the six teams from the bottom league with the worst stadium and least amount of fans are dumped out of the league.”

Willie West, via email, said: "In reply to Lewis Doyle - has he ever been to a Kelty Hearts or Brora Rangers game? How does he know what traveling support they take to matche? Also, there are B teams in the Spanish and German football leagues. So, Lewis, kindly get your facts straight."

Record Sport ’s icons series has really resonated with our readers with the former Scotland great Dave Mackay the latest to be featured.

Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach , said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the feature on Dave Mackay as part of the icons series.

“He went from the all-time great Hearts side that included Willie Bauld and Alfie Conn to that great Spurs side of the 1960s where every player was an international as well as coming back from two broken legs.”

George Wilson, West Sussex, said: “In the 1990s I returned to Scotland after the death of my parents and during that trip went to Musselburgh races.

“I hadn’t been before and asked the driver to tell me when to get off at my stop when a man opposite, who I recognised as Dave Mackay, said, ‘I’m going near there so I’ll tell you when to get off’.

“When I got off I said ‘Sorry to bother you but you are Dave Mackay aren’t you? I saw you playing for Scotland at Wembley when England beat us 9-3’.

“I could have said a hundred other things but he just said ‘Thanks for reminding me son!’ and walked off.”
