The Celtic summer transfer miss which hurts Neil Lennon more than he will admit

Celtic should be applauded for their summer transfer window but there is one glaringly obvious disappointment - and it's not Shane Duffy.

The Hoops bolstered their options with the likes of Vasilis Barkas, David Turnbull, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Diego Laxalt, Albian Ajeti and Duffy arriving at the club during the window.

What's even more impressive is they managed to keep a hold of Odsonne Edouard and Kris Ajer who were widely linked with a move away from Glasgow.

But despite the influx of signings, Neil Lennon missed out on his top target.

Fraser Forster - the one who got away.

It certainly stung at the time, but as the season has progressed that sour taste will not have disappeared.

To Celtic's credit, they did everything they could to bring the Englishman back for another year and acted quickly once they realised it was a no-go as they signed Barkas from AEK Athens.

Forster was always going to a be a tough act to follow after an exceptional year on loan from Southampton, but there has been question marks over Barkas so far.

He's had a few iffy moments and, although it's early days yet, it's a worrying sign Scott Bain has temporarily claimed the no.1 jersey while he was out injured for a short spell. Barkas has not done anything wrong, but he's not exactly played like a £4.5million man either.

Lennon says it's unfair to criticise Barkas and that his performances will improve, but he clearly doesn't trust him yet or he would have thrown him straight back into the starting XI after he returned to full fitness.

He said: "I'm not critcising him. He will improve as he goes along. I think it's unfair to single anyone out when you're going through a difficult spell of games. I think it's unfair and I'm not going to do with that."

Bain has been solid since coming into the side and Lennon recently admitted the Scot has a chance to claim the jersey on a permanent basis.

He added: “Absolutely, yeah.

“Scott was always in and around it anyway. He’s trained well and the time between coming back in June. I think there has been a real sea change in his attitude to his work.

"He’s in the gym very early in the morning and he’s reaping the benefits of that.

"We put a lot of trust in him and faith as we do in Barkas as well, but Scott has done his chances no harm with another big performance.

“When you go away in Europe, you need your goalkeeper to play well and he stood up. He can be pleased with himself as we are.”

Bain is a perfectly good back-up, but in an ideal world, he isn't a Celtic no.1 keeper.

There's no denying he's a step down from Forster and, although Barkas could still come good, it's unlikely he will reach the lofty heights of the 6ft 7in 32-year-old either.

Forster has yet to make an appearance for the Saints this season so a loan deal to Parkhead in January wouldn't be a huge shock, but there's no doubt missing out on him will have hurt Lennon, even if he won't admit it.
