The Celtic role Peter Lawwell will play beyond this summer after Dominic McKay reveal

Departing Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell is weeks away from his official retirement date.

But his replacement Dominic McKay has revealed he still has a role to play for the Parkhead club until 2023.

Lawwell, 62, announced in January his decision to step down this summer.

However, he has one last duty to carry out on behalf of the club — as a board member of the European Club Association.

That's a role Lawwell has held since 2014 while in 2019 he was appointed to sit on UEFA’s Professional Football Strategy Council, a body that discusses key issues such as Champions League reform, and McKay revealed at the unveiling of manager Ange Postecoglou that he'll continue in that remit for the next two years.

The ECA had a turbulent spring when they desperately fought against the shocking breakaway league attempt by the 12 'Super League' clubs - spearheaded in part by their own Andrea Agnelli of Juventus.

The Hoops chief was involved in some tense meetings but he will continue to represent Celtic as he sees out his full term.

McKay said: "Peter will certainly finish up at the end of this month with his responsibilities at Celtic.

"He'll extend — we've got two years left to go on the ECA, the European Club Association.

"And that's a really important role, for Scotland and for the club, to have a representative there.

"He'll stay engaged with that. And what's been brilliant during the whole transition, Peter has been fantastic for me.

"But he's achieved so much, he's been kind enough to say he's at the end of the phone for me. If there are any interesting questions I want to bounce off him, he's always going to be there for me and the club."
