The Celtic legend treatment Neil Lennon deserves according to John Hughes as he points to past Parkhead greats

pTommy Burns was #x2028;determined to leave Parkhead through the same front door he came in rather than escape out the back./p p a href=https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/all-about/john-hughes target=_blank data-link-tracking=InArticle|Link data-content-type=sectionJohn Hughes/a reckons a href=https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/all-about/neil-lennon target=_blank data-link-tracking=InArticle|Link data-content-type=sectionNeil Lennon/a has more than earned the same right. /p p Big Yogi was left shocked by the shameful scenes outside Celtic Park on Sunday night when a group of punters lost the plot in the wake of the shock a href=https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/all-about/betfred-league-cup target=_blank data-link-tracking=InArticle|Link data-content-type=sectionBetfred Cup/a collapse against Ross County. /p pIt might have had an end of days feel for the Hoops boss but charging barriers, battling cops and hurling abuse as players and coaches left was a despicable way to vent their frustration./p pHughes believes Lennon should have enough in the bank to survive this current crisis./p p a href=https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/all-about/celtic-fc target=_blank data-link-tracking=InArticle|Link data-content-type=sectionCeltic/a may have won just twice in their last 10 games but the man in charge has won five trophies on the spin and has the time and games to turn things around. /p p/ pHowever, the former Hoops defender also knows no one is safe from the sack having watched his old gaffer being handed his #x2028;Parkhead P45./p pBurns fell short in his task of halting Rangers#x2019; charge towards nine in a row and a Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Falkirk proved to be the end of the line./p pFergus McCann gave Burns his books and it was proof once again that legendary status doesn#x2019;t mean much in the ruthless world of management./p pHughes gets why the Hoops fans have hit the roof #x2013; and knows Lennon is on the brink./p pBut he feels the man in charge doesn#x2019;t deserve the abuse./p pThe former Hibs and Inverness boss said: #x201C;I get the frustration. It was bang out of order what happened the other night but I can see where it comes from./p p#x201C;Neil will know himself it has not been good enough. The expectation is to win every week and they have not been doing that./p img src=https://i2-prod.dailyrecord.co.uk/incoming/article23094561.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_Celtic-v-Ross-County-Betfred-Cup.jpg data-portal-copyright=Getty Images/ p#x201C;They went out of Europe, they#x2019;ve fallen behind in the league and are now out the Betfred Cup./p p#x201C;There is bound to be unrest. The situation with no fans has really hurt Celtic as there is no place like Celtic Park when there#x2019;s 60,000 people behind the team./p p#x201C;But it#x2019;s also gone against them in other ways. The fans haven#x2019;t had the chance to boo them or vent their frustration./p p#x201C;There has been a build up and you end up seeing it boil over like the other night./p p#x201C;At the same time, if you are to be successful in football you need to have solidarity, that means from the board to the management, in the dressing room and in the support./p p#x201C;You need the fans to be behind the club, not against them. That#x2019;s what a true supporter is./p p#x201C;It wasn#x2019;t nice to see and it will have hurt Neil. He doesn#x2019;t deserve that after the years of service he#x2019;s given the club./p p#x201C;You go back to Tommy#x2019;s time. He had us playing a #x2028;brilliant brand of football and the fans lapped it up./p p#x201C;He ultimately fell short as we were up against a really strong Rangers side who had spent a lot of money./p p#x201C;Tommy left with his head held high, and that#x2019;s the way it should be if it comes to it.#x201D;/p pHughes has spent enough time in the game to know sentiment doesn#x2019;t get you very far and even the greatest manager in Celtic#x2019;s history came to an inglorious end./p pHe said: #x201C;Neil is a club legend who is loved by the fans, just like Tommy./p img src=https://i2-prod.dailyrecord.co.uk/incoming/article22620276.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GD56070.jpg data-portal-copyright=Record/ p#x201C;That doesn#x2019;t save you though when the results are not going your way./p p#x201C;I recently watched the Three Kings documentary about Jock Stein, Matt Busby and Bill Shankly./p p#x201C;Look at what happened to big Jock at the end. He should have been made chairman but he got forced out. Billy McNeill was another who was sacked, Kenny Dalglish, the list goes on./p p#x201C;Those guys were all club legends but their time came. However, they were all shown respect.#x201D;/p pHughes doesn#x2019;t think Lennon#x2019;s time is up yet though./p pHe said: #x201C;Neil deserves time. The board need to take a deep breath. He has earned the right to try to turn it around. There is a long way to go in the league.#x201D;/p
