The Celtic delay that Chris Sutton 'can't understand' amid massive rebuild

Chris Sutton has questioned Celtic’s handling of the managerial situation even though Martin O’Neill is set to stay on as boss.

Reports over the past week have indicated that O’Neill will remain in charge after leading Celtic to a dramatic Premiership title and Scottish Cup double, but the club has yet to formally confirm his long‑term future.

Sutton admitted he has been surprised by how long the process has taken, especially given how much time Celtic have had to prepare since the season ended.

The former striker believes the issue now goes beyond O’Neill’s position and cuts to the heart of how the club plans to back him in the transfer market.

He said: “The biggest thing which I have been confused with is why we are over two weeks on from the end of the season, and Celtic winning the double, and the announcement still officially hasn’t been made. [The Warm-Up]

“It’s about communication. And the fact that there is this silence and the decision-making is taking so long. That’s what I can’t understand. What’s going to be important is not just about Martin being the manager again. It’s about what’s going to happen in terms of recruitment.

“The last two windows Celtic have had have been an absolute disaster. He’s in a very strong position. He’s saying, 'give me what I want'.”
