The Celtic board must admit appointing Neil Lennon was a massive mistake and sack him now - Hotline

Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell are still getting it tight.

Celtic must put the Champions League loss to CFR Cluj behind them ahead of Thursday’s Europa League visit from AIK Stockholm.

However, the Hotline callers are struggling to accept the current situation and the extra-time weekend win over Dunfermline in the Betfred Cup did nothing to take the angst away from some punters who want signings and answers.

John McDermott, Glasgow, said: “The Celtic board are now being found out with their penny pinching. Neil Lennon’s tactics are starting to look amateurish and how is John Kennedy still in the position of defending coach?

“As for the recent signings, what positives can be said there? I think it is just a case of sticking a pin into a list of names and see who it lands on.”

Gerard Kelly sent an email which read: “Neil and the board need to bring in a decent defence. No point in bringing in midfielders and strikers if we can’t defend. We have a good game going forward but our defence is shocking and defeat in the Champions League showed it.

“Lennon and the board is on the verge of losing the support if they don't bring in some decent players.”

Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: “Once again Lennon is diverting the blame. This time it’s recruitment. This from the man who sat £10m of recruits on the bench.

“Just go Neil before you bring the club to its knees again and take Kennedy with you. Does anyone know why he is assistant. All he has done in the last 10 years is lick boots. Just a hanger on.”

David Bryce, Ayr, said: “Memo to the Celtic board. Admit the appointment of Lennon has been a massive mistake and relieve him and Kennedy of their duties with immediate effect.

“And tell him to take Christopher Jullien, Boli Bolingoli and Leigh Griffiths with them. This is going to be a horrendous season if Lenny stays. The players should hang their heads in shame, too. The performance against Dunfermline was so bad it’s painful to watch.”

Lennon praised his players after the Pars win, but William Hutchison, Aberdeen, said: “You have got to be joking. Lennon said he was proud of his players. Poppycock.

“We got knocked out of the Champions League and scraped a 2-1 win over Dunfermline. What’s there to be proud of?

“If we don’t get our act together we will get hammered, not just at Ibrox, but every other team will know we are there for the taking.”

However, Lance Little, Erskine, fired back at the critics of Lennon and also the Rangers fans who have been getting excited about a possible decline at Parkhead.

He said: “In the last few days, your Hotline has been inundated with fans of a team who have not won a trophy in over eight years.

“They have the gall and arrogance to suggest that their team will end Celtic’s domestic dominance and Champions League qualification will be their clubs going forward.

“As a Celtic fan, I find myself laughing at them at the start of every season and also in May when they finish trophyless.

“Celtic and Aberdeen will share the silverware this season with the Dons winning a cup and Celtic the league again.

“We have stamina, a will to win and an experienced team and manager to win the league as usual. So I hope they enjoy their laughing just now because it’ll be tears in May. Again.”

Celtic’s Ambassador Tom Boyd has also sparked a debate for his Celtic TV comments on referee John Beaton over the weekend.

Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, said: “If Celtic had anything in them, then they’d remove him from his role following his blatant accusations of cheating against referee John Beaton.

“Boyd should be reminded that a match summariser is supposed to be impartial.”
