The Celtic and Rangers closed doors warning as Jim McInally dubs football without fans 'senseless'

Jim McInally has rubbished closed doors football as fake and reckons if it is brought in in the Premiership then Celtic and Rangers could struggle.

The Peterhead boss slaughtered the prospect of football without fans as “senseless” and reckons Leagues 1 and 2 should miss out next season entirely if fans aren’t allowed back into stadiums.

Championship clubs too will struggle to survive if the game north of the border returns with empty stands, according to the SPFL's longest serving manager.

Premier League clubs in England are targeting a return from the coronavirus shut down next month while the Bundesliga have already restarted behind closed doors.

There are no firm plans for Scottish football to follow suit.

But McInally, the SPFL’s longest serving manager, told BBC Scotland: "It's not proper football. It's a closed-door friendly. It’s so false.

“Watching the Bundesliga last week, because there wasn't a crowd there the players weren't under any pressure to pass the ball forward.

“You could also see the away teams were quite comfortable.

"It doesn't appeal to me. Football without fans is just pretty senseless to me.

“It might be a necessity in the Premiership. But one thing for sure is that Celtic and Rangers wouldn’t find it as easy to win games without fans behind them.”

McInally reckons closed doors is simply not an option for lower league sides anyway.

"We shouldn't even try it," he said. “Even when I look at Championship and clubs like Dunfermline - teams with a decent support. Queen of the South say they couldn’t do it without financial help so maybe it is going to go all the way up to the Championship where closed doors isn’t going to work.

“Maybe with the Sky deal the Premiership will get away with it. But League One and Two closed doors would be no benefit.

"If we were to play without fans, I would probably give this season a miss - for League One and Two anyway.

"And hopefully we could get some sort of subsidy. We've only got four players signed up for next season so somewhere along the line we would need to come to some sort of agreement with them but we would need help.

“If we can’t start in September or October properly then I think we’d be better giving it a miss.”
