The cat who's become an internet sensation in one Swansea suburb

During the past year, one special feline has made something of a name for himself in the area of Brynmill in Swansea.

Arlo the cat is a gorgeous grey British Shorthair who's now widely known as the 'mascot of Brynmill', and he's taken the community by storm with his colourful character - so much so that he has an entire Facebook group dedicated to him.

Unsatisfied with house cat life, Arlo ventures out every day into the streets in the area, helping himself into people's houses, having a munch on other cats' food - even hanging out with groups of students.

Arlo's owner, Sioned Warwick, has said that she's tried her best to keep him inside, but there is simply no stopping him. You can read more Swansea stories here.

Sioned, 29, from Brynmill, bought Arlo as a Christmas gift for her daughter several years ago, expecting him to be a quiet, playful house cat.

"We initially bought him as a Christmas present for my daughter, and we planned on keeping him inside. We have a load of cat trees and other sensory toys for him to play inside, but he would just sit on the window ledge, clearly looking to get out. He was obsessed with trying to get out.

"One day we were bringing in the shopping and he got out, and that was just the end of it. He'd be out all the time, any excuse. If you just left the window open - even the attic window - out he goes."

Worried about the whereabouts of her beloved cat, Sioned would often go out looking for Arlo, concerned that somebody may have taken him in, or taken him to a vet.

She said: "At first I'd be so scared because he'd go missing pretty much all day, so at first I would go out looking for him. People kept telling me that because he's a pedigree, somebody will probably try and keep him. He always comes home when he's ready, though.

"After a few weeks, I started to see him crop up on the Brynmill Facebook group, with people asking who does this cat belong to, and so on. I started commenting on each post saying he's my cat, and he's well looked after. I've bought him so many collars, but I don't know what keeps happening to them - whether people are nicking them or if he's just found a way to take them off.

"Now I get messages every day from people in the area saying he's just popped in for his breakfast. People in the area love him."

Some of Arlo's favourite spots in Brynmill are the launderette and the bakery, but for Arlo, nothing beats Uplands Ironmongers.

Sioned said: "He goes to the Ironmongers every day, I think, because they sell cat food and he likes the smell. After his trip to the shops, he'll sometimes pop into people's houses and will have a nibble on other people's cat food."

A spokesperson at Uplands Ironmonger said: "He sneaks in and helps himself to food then makes loud noises if he doesn't like what he's had - so he has his own food bowl with us now."

One of Arlo's most adventurous endeavours though is dropping into the student houses of Brynmill to join in the party.

Sioned said: "There's a lot of student houses in Brynmill, and he often wanders into them. I've seen quite a few pictures of Arlo chilling on a beanbag in a student house, chilling with everyone as they have a drink. He's a lad, he just joins in the fun."

While Sioned loves that the community love the cat, she does have some concerns about her feline friend prowling the streets all day.

She said: "The only concern I get is about people keeping him. I'm happy that people love him and he loves the fuss, but he isn't a lost cat. He's very well loved and looked after. I worry that people may take him to the vet or something - but there isn't anything wrong with him, he just loves to roam.

"He's just loving his day out and wants to be left alone to do this own thing. He's loving life."
