The cast iron guarantees Rafa Benitez is looking for from Mike Ashley - according to Newcastle United legend

Rafa Benitez will want cast iron proof that Newcastle United are going to show serious ambition in the next few years during his complex discussions with Mike Ashley.

That is the view of United legend Nobby Solano, with the former Toon star spending time with Benitez last summer and seeing him at work in training during a visit to Tyneside.

After a tense weekend spent waiting for news, fans returned to work in the city on Monday morning hoping that the situation would be concluded soon.

Solano told the Chronicle: "I believe Rafa will want to know how ambitious they are and how much investment Mike Ashley is prepared to make.

"The transfer window is open. The talks really should have taken place before now and this should have been done.

"They have missed out on some targets. They need to push forward quickly.

"The summer time is a busy period and if you are too slow you know what happens."

That is exactly what the concern is surrounding Salomon Rondon who now finds himself a genuine target of Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham after a good season at United.

It is believed Wolves are considering activating the £16.5million escape clause and, after Man City won the FA Cup, the Molineux outfit can now offer European football.

But securing Benitez's services are the most important thing in the eyes of Solano.

He said: "You also need to think of the fanbase and keep them happy.

"The most important thing in Newcastle is football. Mike needs to recognise that.

"They just want to have a good team.

"Things have been made hard for Rafa. Without it nothing can move on.

"Rafa is waiting for the answers."
