The Cardiff roads you won't be able to drive down during the school run without a permit

Three roads in Cardiff are set to be added to a list of zones closed off to vehicles during the school run hours. Ysgol Pwll Coch, Fitzalan High, Kitchener Primary and St Pauls Church in Wales Primary will be added to Cardiff Council's School Streets scheme from September this year.

This will mean the closure of Lawrenny Avenue, Railway Terrace and Bromsgrove Street during peak drop-off and pick-up times. A total of 17 schools are currently part of the School Street scheme which is aimed at improving the safety of children travelling to school, promoting active travel and reducing air pollution.

The scheme affects 26 roads across the city. Only vehicles with valid School Street permits are allowed to access affected streets during the restricted hours.

The road closures which are set to be added to the scheme will affect the four schools at the following times:

  • Ysgol Pwll Coch and Fitzalan High on Lawrenny Avenue: 8.15 – 9.15am and 2.30 – 3.45pm
  • Kitchener Primary on Railway Terrace: 8.15am – 9.15am and 2.15pm – 3.15pm
  • St Pauls CiW Primary on Bromsgrove Street: 8.30am – 9.15am and 2.30pm – 3.15pm

Permits normally last an academic year, from September 1 to July 31, and are free to access for those who are eligible according to the council's website. The news comes as the council is set to launch a permit gate trial scheme in Llanishen. Read more about that here.

Aimed at curbing short-cut traffic on Fishguard Road and Crystal Glen during peak traffic times, the scheme will be brought in on June 19. Those who are eligible to apply for the free digital permit have been urged to do so before the scheme goes live.
