The Cardiff City player ratings vs Wigan as midfield maestro shows steel but striker misses glorious chance to win it

Alex Smithies 7

Made a stunning save late on against Kal Naismith and his distribution continues to start dangerous City attacks.

Jazz Richards 7

Very good from the right back, who switched flanks at half-time and arguably looked far more adept on the left.

Sean Morrison 8

Another captain's performance. Simply unflappable at the back of late and so composed in possession. Won crucial flick-ons from throw-ins and had a winner ruled out.

Curtis Nelson 7

Made a couple of crucial interventions but was also pinged for the handball that led to Wigan's second. Still has a little work to do, positionally.

Joe Bennett 6

Didn't do anything particularly wrong in that first half but was hooked at the break.

Marlon Pack 7

Tremendous in defence and ticked the ball over nicely in the middle of the park all afternoon.

Will Vaulks 8 (star man)

Just gets better and better. Showed real fight and grit in the middle of the park to break up Wigan's attacking threat.

Albert Adomah 6

Showed glimpses of brightness, zipping past his man, but was frustrating at times with the quality of his final ball.

Lee Tomlin 6

Was booted all over the park. Wigan clearly targeted him and didn't afford him any room to work his magic in close quarters.

Josh Murphy 7

Another goal, five now in his last six games and proved a real outlet on the break for Cardiff on that left-hand side.

Callum Paterson 6

Was as combative and abrasive as ever, causing the Wigan defenders all sorts of problems, but just couldn't get in the game.

SUBS

Leandro Bacuna (on for Bennett 45) 5

Came on at right back and, positionally at least, you can see he is more comfortable in the middle of the park.

Junior Hoilett (on for Murphy 75) 5

Was brought on to freshen things up with 15 minutes to go but couldn't quite make his mark on the match.

Danny Ward (on for Paterson 75) 5

Missed a glorious chance in the 90th minute, blazing a volley six yards out well over the bar.
