The Cardiff City player ratings as defensive colossus proves his worth at both ends of the pitch vs Carlisle

Cardiff City are on their way to the fourth round of the FA Cup after emerging from their third round replay with Carlisle United with a 4-3 win.

Here's how the players fared.

Alex Smithies 6

Couldn't do anything about the goals and the Carlisle strikers kept him on his toes. Made a very good save from a firm Stefan Scougall strike.

Cameron Coxe 5

Very difficult conditions for him, with the hosts pumping long balls up to him in the swirling wind. Left his man free for the second goal.

Aden Flint 8 (Star man)

Was a very real threat for the Bluebirds in attack. Got his reward by grabbing a brace and was a rock late on when balls were lumped up top by the hosts.

Sol Bamba 6

A couple of sloppy passes on the floor, but the Bluebirds needed his physicality and abrasiveness given the hosts' game plan.

Jazz Richards 5

City look far better in attack when he is on song, but it was difficult at times to showcase his abilities. Perhaps at fault for their second.

Will Vaulks 6

Cardiff needed his long throw-ins and they proved a real asset throughout the tie. His industry also didn't go unnoticed.

Joe Ralls 7

A welcome return to the side for him. His leadership and range of passing in the middle of the park proved important.

Gavin Whyte 6

Couldn't quite impose himself as he would have liked, but was vibrant and a willing runner all evening.

Callum Paterson 7

A battering ram and the perfect player for this sort of night. Long balls and aerial duels. Could have a big part to play this season.

Josh Murphy 6

Not ideal conditions for him but his volley to put City in front showed tremendous technique.

Danny Ward 7

Again, perhaps not his ideal type of game, but continued to offer himself and be the link-up man. Took his chance brilliantly for the fourth.

SUBS

Joe Bennett (on for Coxe 70) 6

Brought a much-needed calmness in a hectic period in the game. The right substitution.

Marlon Pack (on for Whyte 83) NA

Not on long enough.
