The Cardiff Christmas tree that can be seen from over a mile away

Tony Curtis loves absolutely everything about Christmas.

He has been handing out presents to children in hospital over the festive period for nearly 40 years, and every Christmas his charity Dreams & Wishes takes a group of seriously ill children for a magical trip to London.

But this year he has gone a step further and decorated the 100ft tree that stand in the garden of his Cardiff home.

And with 2,000 lights dressing the giant tree, it can be seen for miles around the city. Traffic has even been slowing down past the Cyncoed home as people stop and stare in awe.

"I love absolutely everything about Christmas," says Tony, who has received an MBE for his services to charity.

"And I have the perfect Christmas tree right outside my house, so this year I thought it would be a good idea to decorate it.

"I hired a cherry picker and decorated it with more than 2,000 lights. It took two days because I had to detangle and sort out the lights the day before, and then it took a good day to decorate the whole tree."

He kept the decoration a surprise for his four grandchildren - Chanel, 13, Dion, 12, Joel, eight, and six-year-old Beau - so he could see their faces when they saw the tree all lit up.

"I couldn't wait to see their faces, but I didn't realise people were going to be able to see it from so far away and we have had lots of people slowing down to look," he said.

"It is such a wonderful time of the year and we try to do as much as possible for children who are having a hard time at this time of year, so it is nice to be able to put some smiles on faces."

Photographer Rob Browne tracked down the house after he spotted the lights from Heath Park, more than a mile away.

"I was walking from the park and could see the lights shining so brightly," he said. "It is quite dark in that part of the city, but you could tell it was a Christmas tree, and it was like a beacon of light. I went looking the next day, and found the tree.

"It looks amazing."
