The Cardiff Bay cafe closing after almost 30 years

If you live or work in Cardiff Bay there's been one constant in the ever-changing landscape.

Now Trumps Coffee Shop has made its last pot of tea and frothed its final coffee as owners Annette and Nigel Mellings have decided to hang up their aprons after running the cafe for 26 years.

A cafe like Trumps was a frequent sight in towns across Wales - but now there are very few traditional China cup and saucer cafes left that serve sandwich triangles and homemade pasties during the lunchtime rush.

The simple and classic nature of Trumps set it apart from the modern complex of Mermaid Quay, a place that didn't even exist when the Mellings took over Trumps back in 1993.

Annette said: "When we first took over the area was really tired and roads were definitely dock-like. It got a little better when Cardiff Bay developed."

Nigel adds: "We've seen a lot of changes, there's been a lot more coffee shops, eateries and supermarkets which has taken its toll on our business as well as a lot of other places around here."

The couple took over the cafe after careers as a grocer and a florist. Since then, they have met and made many friends over the counter.

"We've got a good lot of regulars, sadly a lot who are going to miss us," Nigel, 63, said. "They appreciate what we do and how we do it and why we're leaving.

"But we'll stay in touch with quite a few of them."

Annette, 61, added: "We've had a lovely afternoon, all the flowers, chocolates and cards have been lovely.

"A lot of people who have been coming here for 15 to 20 years on their lunch times and they've retired and come back to us for a cup of tea to meet friends.

"It's been hard work, we've always just had two weeks over Christmas off, harder than we thought it would be, but yes, we've enjoyed the people we've met."

The couple, who live in the Vale of Glamorgan, will now take a break before deciding what to do next.

Trumps is closed as of today, Friday, September 13.
