The Call of Duty FPS series stands tall as one of the largest gaming franchises in the entire world, so it's rather fitting that it also tends to be very content dense, complete with tons of different maps, modes, weapons, skins, and more. Indeed, that deep variety is one of the major reasons it's so popular to begin with — and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, released last November across Xbox, Windows PC, and PlayStation, had the biggest launch of any title in the series in terms of what it offered to players.
Now, three months later, developers Treyarch and Raven Software are eager to keep the content rolling in with the imminent arrival of Season 2, a colossal update for both Black Ops 7 and the free-to-play battle royale experience Call of Duty: Warzone.
Season 2 has a release date of February 5, so it's now only a few days away — and ahead of its launch next week, the Call of Duty team has released its roadmap, along with plenty of details about what players can expect to see in both Black Ops 7 and Warzone.

Though the blog post is absolutely gigantic and covers many of Season 2's new and refreshed maps, game modes, weapons and attachments, events, cosmetic bundles, and various other additions in extensive detail, one of its most notable reveals is about a game mode we know extremely little about thus far.
In the mid-season update for Season 2, Treyarch and Raven Software plan to launch a completely new battle royale mode in Call of Duty: Warzone that takes place on the Avalon map coming to the game. This mode has been "built from the ground up," and draws significant inspiration from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout.
Longtime Call of Duty fans will no doubt recognize that name; Blackout, launched within Black Ops 4 in 2018, was the series' first battle royale experience, and laid the foundations that Warzone would later build upon. Compared to Warzone's emphasis on curating a loadout and then calling it in by completing missions in matches, though, Blackout had a more traditional battle royale structure.
It involved simply dropping into the map and gearing up with whatever you could scavenge across its various points of interest before engaging other players, which added some extra unpredictability to every game that many players enjoyed. Those fans will no doubt be incredibly happy to hear we're getting a Blackout-like mode in Warzone that will likely serve those who enjoy a classic battle royale formula.
Sadly, we don't know what this mode is called yet, and specific gameplay details about it are unknown, too. More information will surely come in the coming weeks as the mid-season update approaches, however.
Note that the Xbox and PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is included in Xbox Game Pass; specifically, you'll need Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to access it, or PC Game Pass if you're a PC-only player. The game also fully supports Xbox Play Anywhere cross-progression.
