The Cadillac Escalade IQ Crushed Its Estimated Range In A 70-MPH Test

  • The 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ is America's longest-range SUV, with 460 miles of manufacturer-estimated range.
  • Tom Moloughney, host of the State of Charge YouTube channel, conducted a 70-mph range test with one.
  • The Escalade IQ managed to go 482 miles and displayed an additional two miles of range remaining.

In 2025, it's looking like range anxiety is nearly a solved problem. Any new electric vehicle worth its salt comes out of the gates with over 300 miles of range. And an increasing number of new models will deliver way more than that—if you have the deep pockets to afford one.

Take the 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ, for example. Cadillac says its electric land yacht will go a bladder-busting 460 miles on a full charge, about 100 miles more than a Tesla Model X and 50 miles more than a Rivian R1S. Better yet, it can actually beat that estimate under the right circumstances, as Tom Moloughney, InsideEVs contributor and host of the State of Charge YouTube Channel, found during a recent range test.

"What a range monster," he said in the video.

Tom took the Escalade IQ up and down the New Jersey Turnpike, maintaining a GPS-measured 70 mph. He kept the climate set at around 70 degrees and the fan speed set to low. But he had to dial things up toward the end as ambient temperatures crept into the eighties.

So, how'd the Escalade IQ do? Tom was in the car for around eight hours, if that tells you anything.

2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ: How Much Range Does It Have?

The Escalade managed to cover a whopping 482.2 miles, while expending 222.7 kilowatt-hours of energy. He pulled up to a charging station with a 1% state of charge and two miles of range remaining, so the SUV had a bit left to give.

According to the trip summary the Caddy provided, 214.9 kWh went to driving, while 7.8 kWh went to the climate system and fast charging prep. As Tom notes in the video, if all of that extra energy had gone to propulsion instead of ancillary functions, he could've easily gone around 500 miles.

I can't think of any situation where you'd want to drive almost 500 miles without stopping—except maybe a zombie apocalypse. But you can do just that in the Escalade IQ

What Else To Know About the Escalade IQ's Range

It's a mighty impressive feat. And this is the kind of performance that could push buyers who've written off EVs to consider buying one. But it's not without caveats.

The IQ has what we often refer to as "dumb range." Just consider that 222.7 kWh it used up during the test. That means the gigantic Escalade's battery is 2-3 times the capacity of most other EVs. In other words, the IQ goes extremely far not because of any groundbreaking improvements to efficiency, but just because it has the biggest "gas tank." During Tom's test, the SUV returned 2.1 miles per kWh.

That huge battery means the Escalade is extremely heavy, weighing in at some 9,000 pounds. It also means it'll take a while to recharge, even on the highest-powered equipment.

The biggest problem: price. Batteries are the most expensive single part of any EV. As such, the Escalade IQ starts at $127,700, far more than the gas-powered equivalent and far more than most people are willing to pay for a new car.

So, range worries may almost be in the rearview. But this kind of go-anywhere, do-anything, outrun-all-the-zombies range? That's still very much a luxury.
