The busiest times on the M4 this bank holiday weekend

With the bank holiday weekend approaching, our roads are preparing for an increased volume of traffic.

Warning motorists to plan well in advance, the Welsh Government has given advice to leave extra time for journeys if passing through particular "traffic hotspots" on the M4 motorway.

Using data from last year's August bank holiday, Traffic Wales said that anyone travelling west along the M4 between J23 Rogiet and J34 Miskin, and between J47 Penllergaer and A40 Carmarthen, may need to prepare for longer travel times.

Predicted M4 bank holiday traffic hotspots:

J23 - J34 (Google)

They have asked motorists to avoid peak times, when journeys could take approximately 10-20 minutes longer than usual.

Delays between J47 and the A40 are the longest, taking up to 40 minutes at the busiest time of day between 10am and 12pm.

This compares to an average journey time of 25 minutes during quieter periods early in the morning and late at night.

The busiest times between J23 and J34 are also 9am - 4pm, with the peak being 1pm.

Here are the travel times on the busiest parts of the M4 over the bank holiday weekend:

Traffic Wales said they anticipate a busy bank holiday weekend, and have urged motorists to check their website before making their journeys, and there has already been congestion reported on some sections of the M4 today.

The yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office will remain in place for Friday night, but conditions are expected to turn drier over the weekend.
