The bus services affected by the city council's plans to claw back millions

A Nottingham bus route which serves hospital staff and patients is set to remain - but other bus services are set to be cut or reduced in a bid to balance the city council's books.

Nottingham City Council has announced plans to make £15.6 million of new cuts, with around another £7.2 million due to be revealed in the coming weeks.

The local authority has been faced with huge cost pressures from Covid-19, but also from anticipated losses of £38.2 million from the sale of failed Robin Hood Energy.

The council is looking at a number of measures to balance its books including the review of its Linkbus network.

The cost-saving proposals include making timetable changes, diversions on existing services, and withdrawing services where journeys can be made by another operator.

The Linkbus includes Medilink, nine Locallink services (L1, L2, L4, L5, L9, L10, L11, L12 and L14) and Worklink (W1).

The council has proposed that Medilink, which serves hospital staff and patients, is retained through Workplace Parking Levy funding, a charge on employers who provide workplace parking.

Councillor Adele Williams, portfolio holder for transport, said: "The council is facing very serious budget challenges at the moment, and we are having to make some extremely difficult decisions on the services we provide.

"This includes a proposal to reduce funding for our Linkbus services.

"We are proposing to limit the effect on services through timetable changes, diversions on existing services, and withdrawing services where journeys can be made by another operator.

"This way we can ensure we continue to provide services to the city and district centres for people living more than 400m away from a commercial bus or tram stop.

"We will be able to issue further details on the routes affected when we begin a public consultation shortly, after which a final decision will be made in March."

Councillor Sam Webster, portfolio holder for finance, growth and the city centre, added: "The Linkbus network, we will be saving £700,000 rationalising the network.

"We're protecting some of the services that serve the more outlying areas of the city where people are furthest away from other bus services, but we are rationalising the network."
