The Bundesliga unity SPFL must replicate as Andy Gray predicts 'not for me' verdicts among fearful stars

Andy Gray believes football bosses must be prepared for player push-back when the time comes for football to restart.

The pundit and former Rangers striker has lauded German authorities for meticulously orchestrating the return of the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Offering as many assurances as possible will be key to restarting competitions while the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage, he insists.

The SPFL and SFA have held talks with the Scottish Government over how the game might emerge from lockdown, with the idea of select stadiums being used as neutral "hubs" a potential solution.

But Gray warned associations must understand that players may resist until safety can be guaranteed.

"Yes, it's not perfect and, yes, what have to wait and see what happens, whether there are any COVID infections due to this weekend's football," Gray told Bein Sports.

"But, I have to say, for a first time out and for what the German government and football federation have done, they deserve a huge amount of credit because it looks like every Bundesliga footballer has bought into this.

"And that's really important.

"The football world has started today, so we wait to see what tomorrow brings and Monday.

"And, particularly, what next brings - Monday to Friday, before we start off again.

"But, I think there will be players in other leagues - big players - who may well say "not for me, I don't fancy it, I'm not prepared to risk myself, my family, my children".

"And we have to understand that but, I think, like Germany, we have to give players as many assurances as we can.

"No one can guarantee ultimate safety, we're foolish if we think we can.

"But if we can guarantee the players every help that we can to be safe, to feel safe, then I think a lot more footballers will want to start than won't want to start."
