The Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba test facing Tottenham if Man United unleash new formation

Tottenham need to get a win on the board on their Premier League return if they are to clinch a place in the top four come the end of the season.

Jose Mourinho's side were in a wretched run of form prior to the suspension of football and their poor results has left them seven points behind Chelsea in fourth with nine games remaining.

The same couldn't be said about Manchester United, however, after a brilliant start to 2020 which has seen them claw their way back into Champions League contention.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, now with January signing Bruno Fernandes pulling the strings and making a huge difference, are unbeaten in their last 11 games in all competitions and the break, unfortunately, probably came at a bad time for them going on their rapid rise.

Spurs, on the other hand, have definitely benefited from the pause in play as Mourinho now has Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Moussa Sissoko and Steven Bergwijn to choose from once again in their quest to gatecrash the top four.

The Lilywhites head coach has a big selection headache on his hands for their first game back against the Red Devils as he finally has the luxury of a fully-fit squad to choose from.

Their opponents have been boosted by Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba's return to fitness, thus meaning Solskjaer also has a few tough decisions to make for the game in N17.

Manchester United have tended to line up in a 4-2-3-1 this campaign but they trialled a new formation in their 1-1 draw at Everton at the start of March.

Solskjaer's formation tweak didn't have that much success at Goodison Park but Pogba's comeback could see it flourish.

The club legend opted for a diamond in the middle of the park and it saw Scott McTominay and Fred play just ahead of holding midfielder Nemanja Matic, with Fernandes, a goalscorer on the day, playing in his favoured attacking midfield role.

Pogba could instantly go straight back into the side alongside Fred as part of the middle two, which in turn would give the United boss a tough choice between Matic and McTominay for the anchor role.

A way of ensuring that all his key midfielders start at the same time, the formation also allows Solskjaer the chance to opt for two strikers full of pace and energy in Rashford and Anthony Martial.

The Norwegian, injury permitting, has the chance to field a very exciting starting XI and he could well unleash it at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday, June 19.

Mourinho will no doubt already have an idea of how he wants to line up against Fernandes and Co and he has demonstrated numerous times in the past that he can stifle opponents with his team selections.

Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso have started regularly in midfield this calendar year, but Sissoko's injury return could see him come straight back in to give the team more energy in the middle of the park and frustrate United in the process.

Solskjaer's formation tweak didn't fully take off at Everton three months ago and all connected with Spurs will be hoping the same happens once again if he plumps for it in north London on Friday week.
