Four Broadway musical stars will enthrall the audience with their singing at a concert in Tokyo later this month.
Aptly titled "The Broadway Musical Concert," the event will feature performers who regularly bring excitement to Broadway, including Tony Award laureates and nominees.
The most notable among the cast is Norm Lewis, known worldwide for singing as Javert in the 25th anniversary concert of "Les Miserables." He was also much acclaimed as the first African-American to play the Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway.
Lewis is also very popular in Japan and came here twice last year.
Jessie Mueller won the Tony Award in the "best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical" category in 2014 for her performance in "Beautiful -- The Carole King Musical," which tells the life of U.S. singer Carole King. One of Broadway's most sought-after actresses, Mueller plays main roles in various Broadway shows. She will come to Japan for the first time to take part in the concert.
Alex Newell is a bright new star who debuted on Broadway playing the character Asaka in "Once on This Island," which won the Tony Award in the "best revival of a musical" category last year. He first made his name in the U.S. musical comedy show "Glee," which became a smash in Japan as well. Newell was cast in the drama after appearing on a TV audition show.
Brandon Victor Dixon, who debuted in 2003 playing Simba in a U.S. touring production of "The Lion King," was nominated for the Tony Award in "The Color Purple" in 2006. He played Aaron Burr in "Hamilton" on Broadway in 2016 and was nominated for the Emmy Award for his performance as Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert."
At the forthcoming concerts, the singers will perform songs from musicals they have starred in, such as "Les Miserables" and "Hamilton," as well as from other famous musicals. The first-class concert allows one to experience Broadway in Japan. It is a great opportunity to feel the excitement and emotion of the real thing.
"The Broadway Musical Concert" will take place on May 18 and 19 at Tokyu Theatre Orb in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo. Visit broadway2019.jp for more information.
