The Bristol restaurants, takeaways, shops and cafes given a 0 or 1 star food hygiene rating so far in 2019

More than 20 establishments across Bristol have received a one or zero-star food hygiene rating already in 2019.

The Food Standards Agency classes businesses with a one-star rating as 'major improvement necessary' and those with zero as 'urgent improvement necessary'.

Inspectors consider how hygienically food is handled, how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored.

Popular Bristol pub for Sunday roasts wrongly given one star food hygiene rating

They examine the building itself, judging its cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and facilities.

Also key is how the business manages and records what it does to ensure food is safe.

We have compiled a list of the 23 establishments given a rating of one star or below so far in 2019.

Bristol Live has approached all parties mentioned for a comment, but if your business would like to add a response to the story, email conor.gogarty@reachplc.com

The information below is publicly available on the Food Standards Agency website. The ratings appear as they do on that website at the time of publication.

"Now I and another staff member have Level Three certificates, and the other two staff have Level Two.

"We have requested a re-inspection. We feel very hard done by. We went from five stars to one. I am really, really upset by the rating."

Mr Wood's daughter Claire added: "My dad is the hardest-working man I know and his butcher shop has done incredibly well over the years."

Asked about the cleanliness of the facilities being found to need improvement, she said: “That was more about the office area which is for the staff’s own tea and coffee making.

"That whole office area has now been re-done and replaced."

"This is a family-run business from the 1980s. I don't like going to a food outlet where I get a bad belly afterwards, and that is not a nice feeling.

"I look out for five-star hygiene when I go out to eat. So we are hoping there will be a second visit soon."
