The Bristol restaurant serving officially the best vegan 'fish' in the UK

Bristol is widely recognised as one of the best places in the world to live if you're vegan and there's now another string to add to its bow.

The PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) Vegan Food Awards recently took place and Best Vegan Fish was awarded to a UK-wide chain which has its roots firmly in Bristol.

Cosy Club has 19 sites across the country but it was started by a trio of friends from the city, who also oversee the popular Lounge brand, which started out on North Street.

The first Cosy Club opened in Taunton and was soon followed by a Bristol branch, opening in a grand building on Corn Street complete with chandeliers - but it's not just an impressive building to look at, as this recent award proves.

If you're wondering what Cosy Club's vegan fish is made from, you're probably not alone.

The answer is crispy battered tofu, combined with minted mushy garden peas and creamy tartare sauce to complete the delicious dish.

Dawn Carr, PETA's Director of Vegan Corporate Projects, said: "Growing concerns about health, the environment, and animal suffering are driving more and more people to choose vegan options.

"As fishing has led to dwindling cod populations, Cosy Club's vegan fish and chips option is an example of the sort of delicious innovation that can help save our imperilled seas."

PETA states that the fishing industry is the world's biggest killer, with more than one trillion fish and other sea animals impaled, netted, and gutted by humans each year.

Other winners on the night

Other awards included Best Vegan Burger, won by UK-wide chain LEON, which earlier this year said it is eyeing up a restaurant in Bristol, and Best Vegan Sausage, which was awarded to Sainsbury's Chorizo Shroomdogs.

Best Vegan Dessert was won by Bella Italia for its Vegan Cookie Dough Al Forno while Costa scooped Best Vegan Cookie for its Chocolate, Caramel and Hazlenut Cookie.

Unsurprisingly, Greggs won Launch of The Year for its wildly popular Vegan Sausage Roll. The full list of winners can be seen on PETA's website.

A PETA spokesperson said: "One peek at a chain restaurant’s menu or a supermarket’s shelves is enough to see just how mainstream vegan food is today – and we couldn’t be more excited.

"From Sainsbury’s meat-free butcher’s shop to Greggs’ vegan sausage roll, a large number of food companies, major supermarkets, and restaurants have stepped up to meet the ever-growing demand for vegan food.

"People are increasingly moving towards a compassionate diet, and progressive brands are changing with the times."
