The Bristol pub with a huge suntrap terrace and its own cricket nets

Countless pubs across the UK can proudly boast about their buzzing atmosphere, their food and drink offering and their beer garden.

But there aren't many which can brag about having their own full-size cricket nets.

In fact, The Old England in Montpelier is thought to be the only pub anywhere in the UK with such a feature.

Today the nets are used by the Old England Cricket Club for practice sessions, but they were first put up in Victorian times so that cricketing legend W.G. Grace could enjoy his two main passions in life - cricket and booze - simultaneously.

It's a quirky feature, but after all, the Bath Buildings boozer is known and loved for being a little unconventional.

"The pub has a really interesting history and it's definitely a quirky place," said Chrissie Mack, assistant manager.

"There's always a really nice, chilled atmosphere in here and we find that people who visit just want to have a good time.

"There’s no pretence about the pub whatsoever, and I think people like that."

In the 19th century the pub was a hit with one of the greatest England cricket players of all time, and today it's loved by a wide range of people for a number of different reasons.

Huge suntrap terrace

One of the Old England's main selling points is its huge suntrap terrace, which really comes into its own in the summer.

While the outdoor space to the rear of the pub is reserved for the local cricket team, non-cricketing visitors can soak up the rays in the higgledy-piggledy beer garden.

Chrissie reckons it's one of the best outdoor terraces in Bristol, with space for around 120 drinkers even with social distancing measures in place.

"It’s a real suntrap and must be one of the biggest pub terraces in the city," she said. "It’s a really open space and gets sun all day, which makes it a really good drinking spot."

The pub recently added even more seating to the terrace so it can accommodate more people once restrictions are eased.

Dark and dingy music venue

The Old England is also known for hosting the sweatiest, most intimate gigs in its dark and dingy basement.

Before the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, the venue welcomed the hottest up-and-coming acts and had an open mic night every Thursday.

Like many others, Chrissie can't wait for live music to return.

"I love that there are old posters on the walls of the pub promoting gigs that took place here years ago," said the 31-year-old, who joined the pub at the start of 2020.

"They give an idea of how well-respected the pub has historically been in Bristol's music scene.

"The dark and dingy room downstairs is ready for live music to return - we're just waiting until restrictions are eased and we can't wait to get going again."

Music lovers can expect to find a few gigs taking place every week at the Old England after restrictions are eased, details of which will be announced on the pub's Facebook page.

Top-notch pizzas

Food at the Old England is currently served by The Risen Pizza Company, a pop-up serving authentic stone baked pizzas from a marquee on the terrace.

To wash the food down there's a wide range of drinks to choose from, with beers on draught including Amstel, Birra Moretti and two of Wadworth's most popular beers, Horizon and 6X. The pub is owned by the Devizes-based brewery.

Chrissie said customers can always expect "great service" at the pub no matter what they're ordering.

"A lot of people have visited for the first time recently and have told us they had no idea we existed," she added. "Quite a few customers have told us we've become their favourite local, which is always lovely to hear.

"I think that's mainly because we've got a fantastic team, and it's just a really chilled place where you're guaranteed great service.

"We're certainly very proud of what we have here."
