The Bristol pub where you won't get served unless you wear a poppy

A pub landlord has instructed bar staff not to serve anyone on Sunday, unless they are wearing a Royal British Legion poppy.

But the Sean Donnelly, the landlord of the Three Lions pub in Bedminster, is offering a free drink to any current or former member of the Armed Forces.

Mr Donnelly has long been passionate about supporting Remembrance Day, and is warning customers they will be turned away if they aren’t sporting a poppy when they come in.

Either that, or they have the option to buy one of a range of poppies on sale at the bar, and only then will they be served.

All you need to know about Remembrance Day and poppies

Present or veteran service personnel will get the red carpet treatment however, and be able to claim their free drink.

It could be a cheap trip to the pub in West Street too - First Bus have already announced that they are offering free travel on Remembrance Sunday to any present or veteran service personnel, and cadets - although they might be too young to take advantage of the Three Lions’ offer.

The pub in West Street is well-known as a patriotic venue - the front was transformed into a giant shimmering England flag ahead of last year’s World Cup, and back then Mr Donnelly said he wanted to reclaim the symbol of the flag from its tarnished association with racism in this country.

The pub was recently nominated to be a shortlisted finalist in our Bristol Loves award for best pub in Bristol.

Mr Donnelly said anyone coming into the pub would be offered the chance to take one for a donation to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, and he had arranged for a range of different kinds of official poppies to be sold at the bar.

Last year, Mr Donnelly said they had to make sure the poppies on sale had the 2018 date on - because some sneaky regulars had dusted off poppies from previous years in a bid to avoid making a fresh donation.

The pub is one of the home pubs for Bristol City fans, and the team are playing away at Cardiff on Sunday from noon - with the match being screened live at the pub, following the Remembrance Day commemorations.
