The Bristol neighbourhoods with the highest covid rates

The number of areas in the Bristol region with higher rates of covid infection has almost tripled in the space of three days, according to the latest data from the government.

A total of 22 areas in the region are now recording infection rates above 50 per 100,000 - a rise of 175 per cent in three days.

In comparison, the data from a week earlier showed only six areas in the region (and all of them were in Bristol) were recording rates that high.

Lockleaze is continuing to record the region's highest covid rate (118.4) after nine cases were recorded in the seven days to June 5.

It is followed by Clevedon Central (9 cases, rate 111.1) in North Somerset and Stapleton (7 cases, rate 105) in Bristol.

Looking at the city as a whole, Bristol's infection rate is now 43.4 which is below the UK average of 51.7 per 100,000 - but nearly double what it was a week earlier (24.6).

The news comes after PHE data showed the number of covid cases in Bristol involving the Delta variant has nearly tripled in the space of a week.

A total of 158 cases involving the variant - which was first identified in India - have now been detected in the city.

At the same time, a rising number of schools in the city are dealing with cases of covid-19 according to the latest data from the council.

Figures from Bristol City Council showed that as, of June 9, a total of 25 schools or early years settings had at least one case of COVID-19 among children or staff.

Where is the data coming from?

You can see the latest national data on the government's website.

The map displays weekly data, which are updated everyday.

The data can be viewed by local authority but also by smaller sections called 'Middle Super Output Areas'.

The map highlights which areas of the nation have three or more confirmed cases of the virus and colour co-coordinates the areas by how many cases they have.
