The Bristol City star set to become only the second Welsh player to reach 100 caps

A Bristol City women star is set to become just the second Welsh player in history to win 100 caps for their country.

Loren Dykes will collect the accolade before Wales women's team take on the Czech Republic in Newport on Thursday.

The 31-year-old full-back signed for Bristol City Women 11 years ago and is a veteran of the international game.

On Thursday she will become just the second Welsh footballer to receive 100 caps, joining teammate Jess Fishlock in reaching the milestone.

Chris Gunter is the most experienced men's team player on 94 caps.

Speaking ahead of the match, Dykes underplayed her remarkable achievements.

"The game has changed so much, so back then there weren't as many games as there are now. We didn't have as many opportunities as we do now," she said.

"We play at least 10 games in a year, whereas back then you wouldn't have had as many so, it's not necessarily about how many caps you've had, it's about what you do with them and about what you've done to help the game progress.

"But I'm lucky enough to be on 99."

The defender, who started out as a winger, said she didn't have any footballing idols when she was growing up, but had her family to thank instead.

"When I was younger there weren't that many woman role models around because when I started playing there weren't that many teams," she said.

"Compared to now you could probably name so many different players but when I was younger I'd probably just say my family, because they kept me going and got me into football.

"It just goes to show how much times have changed in the women's and girls' games now we have those role models there."

Dykes revealed she was a late bloomer, only starting playing football shortly before she started secondary school.

"I think I was about 11 when I started playing, so quite late actually compared to a lot of my teammates," she said. "But it just goes to show it doesn't matter when you want to start playing, if you enjoy something just give it a go.

"I started when I was just about going into secondary school I think, and I loved it ever since.

"It's never too late to start playing but the younger you are the better it is because you get more chance to play on the ball and I think it helps you as you grow up as well."

The Bristol City captain has had all eyes on her this week in the build-up to Thursday's friendly, although she admitted she hasn't enjoyed the attention.

Asked if she liked the spotlight, she said with a laugh: "No, it's not for me but I've been told many times now to embrace it and enjoy it because it doesn't happen very often.

"Hopefully in the years to come we're going to have a lot more younger players reaching these milestones a lot earlier.

"It's definitely a moment to enjoy and be proud of for my family and friends, but not so much the spotlight for me."

She added: "You never take it [a call-up] for granted, every time you get that email you're just grateful to be in the squad and you're privileged to be there among all the other players as well.

The magic number of points Bristol City need to secure a play-off spot - and how many they're expected to get

"It's definitely something you never take for granted and never should take for granted. It's always a massive honour."

The defender admitted the milestone had never been on her radar but it will be 'a dream come true'.

She said: "You don't think about it. The nature of football you just go from one season to another and there's always a challenge and a goal to reach.

"This wasn't one on my mind, but as you get older and as you get closer obviously you start thinking 'maybe I'll get there'.

"It's a bit of a dream come true in some ways but it's not the be all and end all, it's about the team and we're preparing for a game tomorrow but at the same time it's a massive achievement."

Dykes will take to the field in front of a record crowd for a friendly for the women's team tomorrow in Newport.

Wales take on the Czech Republic at Rodney Parade at 7pm on Thursday (April 4).
