The Bristol City, Cardiff City and Preston North End managers who are the Championship's longest-serving

Neil Harris' departure from Millwall on Thursday night means the Championship has lost its longest-serving manager with the Lions legend having been in the job for more than four years.

Harris is very much an outlier in terms of time spent in charge with the growing need for managers to make an immediate impact gradually shortening the shelf life of those in charge in England's second tier.

The Premier League is the ultimate prize and such are the riches on offer, the desire to get there only increases a club's ambition often beyond realism and resources.

There are a clutch of managers in the Championship who are standing the test of time, to an extent, although even their spells in charge resemble relatively short periods to be in a job. Here are the top five ...

5. Alex Neil (Preston) - 2 years, 91 days

The Scot was appointed in July 2017 to replace Simon Grayson following his departure to Sunderland having previously led Norwich into the Premier League.

Neil has since transformed Preston into one of the league's most consistent sides with the Lilywhites very much in the play-off mix this season.

Record: Won - 44, Drawn - 34, Lost - 34; Success - 39.3%

4. Paul Cook (Wigan) - 2 years, 125 days

Cook returned to his native north west after a successful stint with Portsmouth and earned promotion in his first season at the DW Stadium plus guided the Latics on an impressive FA Cup run, beating West Ham, Bournemouth and Manchester City.

In his first asd a Championship manager, Cook led Wigan to 18th and safety despite having one of the smallest budgets in the division.

Record: Won - 52, Drawn - 29, Lost - 37; Success - 44.1%

3. Tony Mowbray (Blackburn) - 2 years, 223 days

Appointed in February 2017 after Owen Coyle's disastrous reign, the experienced former Celtic and Middlesbrough boss steadied the ship, only losing three of their 15 matches on his watch, but couldn't avoid relegation into League One.

Mowbray took Blackburn back up at the first time of asking from League One and on their return to the Championship finished 15th in the 2018/19 season.

Record: Won - 60, Drawn - 36, Lost - 37; Success - 45.1%

2. Neil Warnock (Cardiff City) - 2 years, 363 days

The Bluebirds are the 15th club of Warnock's long career and potentially the last but his time in the Welsh capital has also been one of his most memorable stints in the dugout.

Warnock took Cardiff into the Premier League - a record eighth promotion - and out of it again, had to deal with the Emiliano Sala tragedy, and is now plotting a route for the club back into the top tier.

Record: Won - 58, Drawn - 27, Lost - 53; Success - 42%

1. Lee Johnson (Bristol City) - 3 years, 239 days

Following in the footsteps of one of the Robins most successful managers in Steve Cotterill, signing Johnson from Barnsley was something of a gamble for the Lansdown family.

There have been bumps in the road along the way, and pressure on the board to end the project, but patience has been rewarded with the club achieving season-on-season growth under the 38-year-old.

With Johnson at the helm for a third straight season, the Robins are now well-placed to make that next step and secure a play-off spot and potential promotion to the Premier League.

Record: Won - 73, Drawn - 48, Lost - 63; Success: 39.7%
